The Vishu

Vishu is Kerala’s astrological New Year, celebrated around April 14th/15th, marking prosperity, new beginnings, and the vernal equinox (equal day/night). Key traditions include waking up to the Vishu Kani (a symbolic arrangement of fruits, rice, coins, mirror, and golden shower flowers) for good fortune, elders giving Vishu Kaineettam (money gifts to younger ones), feasting on special dishes like Sadhya, and bursting firecrackers.

Key Aspects of Vishu:

  • Timing: First day of the Malayalam month of Medam (April/May).
  • Significance: Astrological New Year, harvest festival, symbolizes prosperity and good over evil.
  • Vishu Kani (First Sight): The most important ritual; seeing auspicious items first thing in the morning for a lucky year.
  • Vishu Kaineettam: Elders give money/gifts to younger family members as blessings.
  • Feasting: Special meals are prepared, often featuring fresh harvest.
  • Mythology: Associated with Lord Krishna’s victory over Narakasura and the Sun God’s return.
